Forever alone: Pretend you have a friend with the Selfie Arm! | Dangerous Minds
Photo by Aric Snee Perhaps one of the most important inventions of this 21st century… may I present to you, dear Dangerous Minds readers… the Selfie Arm. Designed by artists Aric Snee and Justin Crowe, the lightweight fiberglass Selfie Arm makes it appear someone is lovingly holding your hand whilst taking a photo of you. The Selfie Arm, in theory, I suppose, makes you look less narcissistic. At the very least it gives lie to the notion that someone actually gives enough of a shit about you to take a photo of your smiling (friendless) face. Right? Or am I...

Trendy celebrity diets photographed like stately still lifes from the Renaissance | Dangerous Minds
The Beyoncé Cleanse   Italian photographer Dan Bannino has recently completed a cheeky art project, to translate a bunch of celebrity fad diets from our own time (as well as a couple from a few centuries ago) and depict them in the form of a magnificent still life by a great master, perhaps an inspired 17th-century “daubster” (hey, I had to look it up too) from Holland, Flanders, or some place like that. I can’t remember who said it, possibly someone from Monty Python, that the essence of comedy is to elevate the humble and bring down the lofty, and this series of photographs (which are quite pretty in their own right) certainly fits that paradigm. Here’s Bannino’s comment on the series:  With…

Dangerous Minds | Watch ‘Moon Rock,’ a 1970 psychedelic sci-fi cartoon from ‘Yellow Submarine’ animator George Dunning
While the style is certainly recognizable, the tone of George Dunning’s 1970 cartoon “Moon Rock” is a vastly different from its predecessor, Yellow Submarine. After a countdown and blast-off, our faceless astronaut lands on what appears to be the Moon, where a series of psychedelic characters are there to greet him, including a Blue Meanie-reminiscent slug-thing requesting chocolate and jelly. Interspersed with real video footage, the surreal subjects and austere setting make “Moon Rock” a product of its time without being dated. The trippy ambient music is from Ron Geesin, who also co-composed the “Atom Heart Mother” suite with Pink Floyd. Apparently Dunning based the narrative on the notion of “lateral thinking,” a creative problem-solving concept from New Agey self-help consultant, Edward…

Dangerous Minds | Helen Keller was a militant anti-capitalist radical
Today is International Workers’ Day. Happy May Day comrades!  “The few own the many because they possess the means of livelihood of all ... The country is governed for the richest, for the corporations, the bankers, the land speculators, and for the exploiters of labor. The majority of mankind are working people. So long as their fair demands - the ownership and control of their livelihoods - are set at naught, we can have neither men’s rights nor women’s rights. The majority of mankind is ground down by industrial oppression in order that the small remnant may live in ease.”  — Helen Keller, 1911 This is taken from a short essay about Helen Keller’s political activism found at Dorian Cope’s <a

Dangerous Minds | Want to become Anonymous? There’s a workshop for that!
A curious listing popped up in the registration section of Machine Project, a grassroots educational facility in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Bearing the title “Becoming Anonymous,” the listing proposed to teach registrants to learn the techniques used by the infamous and admirable hacktivist collective Anonymous. The class costs $95 for Machine Project members and $110 for non-members; the three 180-minute sessions are scheduled for March 4, 11, and 18 at 7pm. Here’s the course description in full:  Becoming Anonymous is a three-session workshop that will focus on methods for the circumvention or blocking of digital and real-world surveillance.…

Devil's Pool
05 June 2012 to 14:29
Devil's Pool is a rocky depression on the edge of the Victoria Falls, located along the Zambezi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. During the dry season, Devil's Pool is shallow enough that people can safely swim right to the edge before the waterfall drops more than 300 feet. Because of a natural rock wall just below the surface, swimmers don't get swept down by the force of the falls. This is as close as you can get to the edge of the world’s largest waterfall.
Is this the ultimate (and most dangerous) infinity pool in the world? The natural water hole perched on the edge of the Victoria Falls | Mail Online
If you are looking for a taste of life on the edge, this just has to be the place. Only a slippery, submerged lip of rock stands between these bathers and a 100m drop over the world's largest waterfall. The Devil's Swimming Pool is certainly aptly named. It is created each year at the fringes of Victoria Falls, when the dry season reduces water levels to create what has been likened to the ultimate infinity pool
