The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
26 July 2012 to 20:04
Franz Kafka was a very intuitive person. It seems as if he really saw things as they were. He saw a side of humanity that many of us do not see and he gives us a very unique perspective to learn from. Kafka's The Metamorphosis gives us the story of the young Gregor who has been transformed into an insect. Gregor is not an adult, but even so has been supporting the members of his family through his hard work. The family that Kafka shows us is not a loving and kind family, they are a family that is overcome by their desperate (or not so desperate) need for money. Each major event in the novel is caused by some circumstance where money is the root of the problem. Gregor's father begins to despise him almost immediately, his mother and sister come more slowly, but in the end each member of his family forgets about their love for Gregor. Though resentment towards his family grows, Gregor still has their best interest at heart. It is sad to read the story as each event seems to rip Gregor's family farther and farther away from him. He sees these events happening and tries to cling on, tries to be a good little cockroach, but his metamorphosis has just changed him too much. Kafka shows us in the story how powerful economic factors can be in the world. We know that Gregor's family loved him and certainly didn't want him to be turned into a cockroach, however when he was changed their love did not faithfully endure through the hardship.
